Q & A:
COL: How old are you and where are you from?
JSN: I am 46 years old from Oslo.
COL: What do you do?
JSN: I am a photographer.
COL: How long have you been doing it?
JSN: I have been an art photographer for 4 years and before that I worked as a commercial photographer.
COL: What’s your first artistic memory?
JSN: My godmother was a very artistic soul who had a nice collection of paintings, sculptures and handcrafted asian art. As a former ballet dancer she introduced me and my sister to the ballet. I was fascinated by the costumes and the scenery. My first mind-blowing experience came later when I saw the the art installation of Bill Viola in an old cathedral in Paris. I loved seeing a piece of contemporary art put into an old beautiful scenery like that.
COL: What inspired you to pursue a career in art?
JSN: I finally came to the intellectual knowledge of what was best for myself.
COL: Do you remember your first work of art?
JSN: Not really
COL: If you could have any piece of art in history, what would you choose?
JSN: I would choose the one that would give me the most economic freedom. For me the diversity of art is what is interesting.
COL: What is your relationship with fashion?
JSN: I started my career in photography working as an assistant for french fashion
photographers, doing haute couture shots for french Vogue etc. I loved being around the nice scenery of photographers, models, designers, make-up artists and lots of beautiful clothes.I decided that i wanted to become a fashion photographer. All though I loved doing fashion shooting this was not enough to keep me going as a commercial photographer in Norway, but lately as an art photographer I have the freedom to get back to that spirit and I always want my pictures to have a hint of fashion in them.
COL: What does the word “collective” mean to you as an artist?
JSN: I guess Collective means being part of something bigger. The life of an artist is often a lonely one, so I guess collective means the opposite.
COL: What is the best and worst thing about being an artist?
JSN: The best part of being an artist is the feeling of beeing in control of your own creativity and time. The worst part of being an artist is that no-one throws you a safety net.
COL: Who do you admire?
JSN: Other artist and hard working photographers is the most easy people for me to admire since these are people I can relate to.
COL: What can we expect to see at this year’s festival?
JSN: All my pictures have a hint of fashion, humor and vulnerability….and of course a female body put into an awkward situation.
COL: Who are you excited to see?
JSN: I have not yet seen a list of the other participants, but I have always been exited about everything in this festival.
COL: How important is the ability to expose your art to you and your creative field?
JSN: I think every artist want to be seen and acknowledged for their art, so the ability of exposing your art is very important.
