JL: 61 from Reno, Nevada
COL: What do you do?
JL: I am photographer
COL: How long have you been doing it?
JL: Since I was 17
COL: What’s your first artistic memory?
JL: Seeing the Diane Arbus exhibition at MOMA in 1972
COL: What inspired you to pursue a career in art?
JL: My family. My grandfather was a portrait photographer. My brother and sister in law encouraged me.
COL: Do you remember your first work of art?
JL: Yes my portraits from the streets of Reno.
COL: If you could have any piece of art in history, what would you choose?
JL: Anything Francis Bacon
COL: What is your relationship with fashion?
JL: I was Helmut Newton’s assistant and friend for many years
COL: What does the word “collective” mean to you as an artist?
JL: Collaboration
COL: What is the best and worst thing about being an artist?
JL: Freedom

JL: I admire people that do what they believe in over a period of time. It’s not always fun.
