Pernille Sandberg

Pernille Sandberg is a Danish photographer working in the fields of art, documentary and fashion. She is currently working between Scandinavia and Berlin. Her work exposes and investigates human characteristics such as anxiety, purity, solitude and coexistence. Her list of clients include L’Officiel Italia, DANSK Magazine, Vogue UK, Warner Music and Nowness. She has been participating in group exhibitions across the world, most recently in Tehran, Amsterdam and Tokyo.

Q & A:
COL: How old are you and where are you from?
PS: I’m 24 years old and was born in Copenhagen, Denmark.
COL: What do you do?
PS: I work as a photographer mainly in the fields of art, fashion and documentary.
COL: How long have you been doing it?
PS: My dad provided me with a Olympus mju-ii when I was 5 years old.
COL: What inspired you to pursue a career in art?
PS: When I was younger I was sure I would pursue an academic career - I attended a school which had been proven to be the school which gave their students the biggest amount of homework every day in Denmark. Nevertheless, I grew up with a dad who’s been traveling continuously my entire life and exposed me to art and the pleasure of visual creation and that definitely inspired me to pursue a career as a freelance photographer.
COL: Do you remember your first work of art?
PS: I remember my first art book - it was a book on Japanese art porn from the 18th century.
COL: If you could have any piece of art in history, what would you choose?
PS: System 1 would pick the Damien Hirst’s For the Love of God. System 2 would go for Picasso’s self-portrait from
1900 (charcoal on paper).
COL: What is your relationship with fashion?
PS: It’s a love/hate romance.
COL: What does the word “collective” mean to you as an artist?
PS: To me, the word collective means sharing creativity and help to carry each other through the ups and downs when living as artists.
COL: What is the best and worst thing about being an artist?
PS: Those two concepts go hand in hand. The worst thing is working until it becomes uncomfortable, lose track of
time, diet, and social activities. The best thing is the kick which enters your mind and body when you realize what
you’ve created and everything makes sense for a moment.
COL: Who do you admire?
PS: My friend Eugène van Lamsweerde who’s been utterly consistent and true to his own creative vision since 82
years.
COL: What can we expect to see at this year’s festival?
PS: A beautiful dystopia.
COL: Who are you excited to see?
PS: The art installation by me and Bjørn Gunnar Staal.
COL: How important is the ability to expose your art to you and your creative field?
PS: It is essential.
