Bendik Giske (NO/DE) is a saxophonist and composer exploring the range of possibilities of his instrument as well as his physical capabilities as a performer. In a series of site-specific recordings due for release on Smalltown Supersound 2019, he fully incorporates the sound of the room, the mechanics of the saxophone, his breath and his voice to form a listening experience inspired by the queer techno scene he is a part of.

COL: How old are you and where are you from?
BG: 36 Oslo
COL: What do you do?
BG: I make music and performance art
COL: How long have you been doing it?
BG: Since childhood
COL: What inspired you to pursue a career in art?
BG: The inspiration I found in art - a wish to live with authenticity
COL: Do you remember your first work of art?
BG: No, I ́ve always been immersed in art. The separation between life, reality and art is not something we were bothered with in my family.
COL: If you could have any piece of art in history, what would you choose?
BG: Something intangible, like a gesture or a sound. Then I would immediately share it. What is “to have” anyway?
COL: What is your relationship with fashion?
BG: Fashion lies between consensus and opposition, between art and life. It ́s woven into our chores and impulses whether we like it or not. I used to feel very excluded by fashion. Now I feel like I´m using it to be in opposition to a consensus. I ́m confused by my own answer
COL: What does the word “collective” mean to you as an artist?
BG: I think of our creative community as an orb. Wére all a part of the orb, no use resisting. Every now and then, when forces are joined, little bursts of energy make a little fuzz on the surface, visible to the outside world.
COL: What is the best and worst thing about being an artist?
BG: Freedom and and lack of framework, respectively.
COL: Who do you admire?
BG: Wayan Nataraja, a tireless carrier of Balinese traditional music and dance. I love him <3
COL: How important is the ability to expose your art to you and your creative field?
BG: NOT IMPORTANT. Make something powerful, and it will get noticed! Dońt get misled by promises of exposure, get paid for your work or take it elsewhere.
